Interpreting the Square

Interpreting the Square was a community-based collaborative art project created, organized, and curated by Sara Brooks and myself between October 2008 and September 2009. Thirty artists and creative writers from Indiana University and the Bloomington community collaborated on the installation, which explored Bloomington’s thriving business district. Each artist was paired with one of the thirty buildings facing the Courthouse Square and created an artwork based upon his or her interests and medium. The layout of the artwork in the final exhibition, which ran during the month of September 2009 in City Hall, reflected the format of the Square itself. The result was a multimedia installation that portrayed the complexity of the Bloomington Square by combining thirty points of view into one work of art.

Interpreting the Square was funded in part by the The Fran Snygg Grant for Artistic Collaboration from Indiana University.
