Large Letters, Small Signs

Large Letters, Small Signs was my MFA thesis in Printmaking, which I received in 2010 from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University in Bloomington. The work was on display in the school’s SoFA Gallery from March 30th to April 10th, 2010. Images of the show can be seen in the Exhibitions section of this website.

To create Large Letters, Small Signs, I chose four close friends and family members to serve as the recipients of a series of mailed artworks. Three recipients received double-sided, postcard-like pieces, and the fourth recipient received a series of folded papers, inspired by the look and content of letters. The four recipients also received unique, handmade boxes in which to collect their mailings. Media used include screenprint, collage, watercolor, ink, colored pencil, and graphite on paper and board. Some pieces have also been combined and reproduced digitally as archival inkjet prints.

In an accompanying project, I screenprinted a large-scale, double-sided letter that was editioned and sent to twenty-five recipients in personalized mailing tubes, which were displayed in the gallery along with a copy of the letter.
